Switch Datacenter (Switch) announced on Wednesday that it is selling its Amsterdam AMS1 Data Center to .
According to a statement released by the data center operator, Equinix will be paying €30 million ($34 million) for AMS1. The deal was completed in an all-cash transaction.
“The transfer of the AMS1 data center to Equinix shows that Switch is respected and trusted by leading global players,” said Edgar van Essen, a managing director at Switch.
‘’This message is in line with the trust received from many other market leading names in the industry who trust us their ICT infrastructures and business.
Switching focus
The deal comes as Switch has shifted focus to the colocation wholesale market and customer-specific site development for enterprises and hyperscale customers.
Though the company started life as a provider of retail colocation services, its experience in that market has enabled it to make the leap into actually building data centers for firms.
“Over the years, Switch has created the right skillset and references in this market,” said Switch’s founder and chief executive officer Gregor Snip.
“At first as a hosting company and later on as a renowned retail colocation provider, while we are now for years already highly experienced in building, designing and improving data center sites. Now it is the right time to bring this unique knowledge forward and focus even more on becoming a data center technology development leader.”
Aside from AMS1, Switch owns two other data centers in Amsterdam – AMS2 and AMS3. The former is used mainly by an international IT firm and the latter was built by Switch for an unknown company which also provides colocation services.
