Nomura Secures Arif Merali as its New Head of Swaps Trading

Nomura Holdings, the largest brokerage in Japan, has added a new member to its trading team, appointing Arif Merali as its new head of swaps trading and a managing director of its London operations last month.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Merali is in charge of British Pound (GBP) swaps trading for the Japanese bank. He is one of the latest hires to join Nomura’s trading team after Bloomberg reported that Steve Ashley, who is responsible for running global trading at the firm wanted to ‘replace senior staff and change the leadership in London.’

As a result, Merali is not the only recent hire to Nomura, with Ashley recruiting some of his former colleagues at RBS, including James Konrad, Biagio Lapolla, and Robbie Anderson for flow rates trading.
In addition, as earlier today, Instinet Incorporated, the US equities arm of Nomura, announced that it has appointed Ralston Roberts as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Roberts is replacing who recently left the firm to join cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, where he is a Managing Director. Back in August of this year, Roberts was rumored to be leaving to join Instinet as the Chief Operating Officer.

Before being apart of Nomura’s trading team, Merali was a Managing Director at , a position he held for more than 15 years – from May 2003 until September 2018. During his time with the firm, he was based in London.

Prior to this, he was a Vice President at Capital Markets Corp. Here he worked from September 1995 up until March 2003, when he left to join Credit Suisse. From 1992 until 1995, when he graduated, Merali attended the University of Cambridge where he studied a Master of Arts (MA) in the field of Mathematics.
