BREAKING: eBay user information compromised

Even industry giants can fall. eBay, one of the largest online platforms for selling online has succumbed to a security breach.

eBay will soon be sending out notifications to the 112 million registered users to change their login details due to the security breach. The breach currently has only affected users’ encrypted passwords. According to eBay, the state of financial information saved to eBay’s payment service PayPal is safe and not affected from the breach. Furthermore spokespeople from eBay state no spike in fraudulent activity was recorded.

The security breach was discovered by the Ecommerce giant about 2 weeks ago. According to a by the company the malicious activity took place between late February and early March. The cyber-attackers first compromised a group of employee log-in credentials to gain access to the larger user database.

Along with user passwords, other basic information was made available. The info includes names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth. eBay continues to stress no personal or delicate information was compromised. The company made it clear that PayPal and its accounts were not involved in the attack.
