Proposals to block credit card payments from porn websites that do not prohibit under-age viewing is to be discussed in next month’s summit.
According to the , The UK government is taking a strong stand against online pornography and its exposure to viewers under the age of 18. In addition to blocking credit card payments from unaligned websites, various other preventative actions are in discussion like the enforcement of an “opt-in” application, which, although thought to be a good idea by David Cameron (PM), comes up against the beliefs of web freedom supporters.
Proposals suggest that both credit card companies and banks refuse payments from porn sites that do not actively control under-age viewing. It is suggested that this be a voluntary drive but the possibility of legal enforcement is not yet ruled out.
These actions may seem punishing but they follow failed attempts at protecting children in this manner and are often let down by poor policing of sites based in other countries. Damian Green, the minister for policing and criminal justice also mentions the “possibility of declining to process payments to websites operating outside the European Union which allow under-18s in the UK to view explicit pornographic content”.
The summit will be attended by representatives from credit card companies, banks, the British Bankers Association, the UK Cards Association, the Payment Council and website regulator, the Authority for Television on Demand (Atvod)
