Cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin in particular have mainly reached the mainstream TV audience via the news whenever there was a hacker demanding a ransom or a story about terror financing. The always interesting field is finally getting some more theatrical focus with a new series from Crackle called StartUp.
The producers describe the show as a “Crackle Original Series about a group of unlikely business partners who take dirty money to fund their start-up—and risk paying with their lives.” It stars Adam Brody (The O.C., The League), Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist, Twilight), Otmara Marrero (Graceland) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock).
Crackle is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s online streaming service and the company is trying to lure in young millennial viewers, known to be TV cable-cutters, with a drama about their favorite subject, Bitcoin alternatives. The action follows the adventures behind GenCoin, a cryptocurrency venture on its tumultuous road to disrupt the prevailing global financial order.
In an interview with Hollywood’s , Crackle GM Eric Berger said: “It’s also a very unique look at the tech world that we hadn’t seen before. So, this is not like a Silicon Valley or a social network take. This is about some real grassroots tech development and explores how these great ideas are happening in garages in Miami, which is a burgeoning tech scene, but it’s representative of how tech is developed around the world.
And this cryptocurrency is a fascinating topic that is very hot right now and a lot of people are exploring ways to get into cryptocurrency and make money through cryptocurrency. But the last thing we found is that it was very authentically youth-oriented. That it had a real mature millennial appeal touching on many of the issues that are real to them.”
