A couple of Canada’s top securities experts, Robert P. Hutchison and Mark J. Sandler, were today named commissioners of the Ontario Securities Commission. The newly appointed executives on the board of directors will each serve a two-year term, effective beginning February 2, 2017, the OSC officially announced on Tuesday.
Both Robert and Mark bring substantial experience in key areas of the capital markets, while their specialized expertise will be an asset to the OSC in the effective regulation of increasingly complex and rapidly evolving capital markets.
Mr. Hutchison is exceptionally well qualified for the job, bringing 40 years of experience in in Canada’s regulatory community. His appointment comes as the OSC is also preparing for the launch of a new federal-provincial securities regulator, which has a launch date of 2018.
One of Mr. Hutchison’s recent roles was practising business law at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, focusing on financial services. Moreover, he has specialized in regulatory infrastructure for the private securities industry, including working with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA), among many others.
The provincial regulator also appointed Mark Sandler, a veteran of capital markets regulation in Canada, as its newest commissioner. Before joining OSC, he served as the senior partner of Cooper, Sandler, Shime & Bergman LLP. Mark’s career encompassed various responsibilities but was mainly focused on criminal and regulatory law. Mr. Sandler has over three decades of experience as an adjudicator on administrative tribunals, with prior chairs coming from the legal, financial or regulatory communities.
Speaking about the new appointments, Maureen Jensen, Chair and CEO of the OSC, said: “The breadth of expertise that Bob and Mark bring to the Commission will assist us in protecting investors and fostering fair and efficient capital markets in Ontario. I am immensely pleased to welcome Bob and Mark to the Commission, given their longstanding leadership and commitment to public service.”
