CME Group (NASDAQ: CME), the world’s largest derivatives marketplace, has released its volumes for August 2017. The Average Daily Volume (ADV) has shown an increase of 30 percent on a year-on-year basis with a total of 3.1 million option contracts being traded per day in August with open interest of 63.3 million.
CME’s main segments continued to show a strong reading across its interest rate space, which had an ADV of 1.7 million contracts in August 2017, an increase of 34.0 percent year-over-year with open interest of 46.0 million.
In this segment, eurodollar options registered an ADV of 0.97 million, which is an increase of 15.0 percent year-on-year. Treasury options came in at an ADV of 0.78 million in August 2017, rising 67.0 percent year-over-year. Equity index options, including the E-mini, S&P500 and E-mini NASDAQ 100 options, had an ADV of 0.72 million contracts for August 2017, an increase of 40 percent year-on-year.
The only segment that saw a drop during the month of August was the energy segment. Option contracts for crude oil and natural gas registered an ADV of 263,737 contracts. This reflects a decline of 12.0 percent year-over-year when compared to the same month last year.
Overall, CME Group continues to show strong volume in the options sector despite the volatility in the markets being low, which is indicative of the growing interest in this sector.
