Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME), the operator of all stock markets and financial systems in Spain, has reported its trading volumes for the month ending April 30, 2017, which showed a mixed performance across key areas, including ETF turnover that was lower by double digits year-on-year.
Delving into the metrics, the Spanish Stock Exchange revealed that equity trading volume pointed higher last month, coming in at €69.7 billion ($76.1 billion), up 19.8 percent compared to March 2017’s figures. Across a yearly interval however, the trading volume in April 2017 was down by a factor of 10.7 percent when compared with the same month a year earlier.
In addition, the number of trades last month increased by 16.0 percent in month on month terms, printing a figure of 4.3 million but also reflecting a 7.1 percent decline year-on-year. The year-to-date number of equity trades reached 17.1 million, down 15.2 percent year-on-year.
In terms of BME’s ETF segment for April 2017, the figure amounted to €380.5 million ($415.3 million) – this represents a loss of 25.6 percent from a year earlier. Across the YTD interval, ETF volume was €1.4 billion ($1.53 billion), down 47 percent relative to the four month period through April 2016.
As for trading volume in the derivatives market in April 2017, the figure maintained a positive tone, having yielded 3.3 million contracts – this represents an increase of 11.6% from the same month last year.
In terms of the Spanish Fixed Income Market, the trading volume for April 2017 totalled €9.7 billion, down 15.8 percent year on year, which was in line with the overall trend worldwide of low trading volumes.
