Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME), the operator of all stock markets and financial systems in Spain, has reported its trading volumes for the month ending January 31, 2017, which showed a mixed performance across key areas, including ETF turnover that was lower by double digits YoY.
Delving into the figures, the Spanish Stock Exchange revealed that equity trading volume pointed higher last month, coming in at €56.3 billion ($60.50 billion), up 15 percent MoM compared to December 2016’s figures. Across a yearly interval however, the trading volume in January 2017 was down by a factor of -24 percent YoY when compared with January 2016’s figure of €69.8 billion ($75.02 billion).
In addition, the number of trades in 2016 decreased by 2.0 percent in month on month terms to 3.9 million, which also reflects a -24 percent YoY drop.
In terms of BME’s ETF segment for January 2017, the figure amounted to €255.4 million ($274.53 million) – this represents a drop of 66 percent YoY compared to 2015. Across the monthly interval, ETF volume was down 34 percent relative to December 2016.
As for trading volume in the derivatives market in January 2017, the figure maintained the negative tone, having yielded 3 million contracts – this represents a drop of -8.8 percent YoY when weighed against the same month a year earlier. In terms of open interest at the start of the year, the figure reversed the narrative, as it did correspond to a MoM advance with the overall trading volume in January 2017 higher 10.7 percent compared to its December’s equivalent.
