Vodafone brings M-Pesa to Romania

In a move to corner the European remittance and money transfer market Vodafone is bringing African Service M-Pesa to Romania.

M-Pesa in Romania will work with any Vodafone subscription in the country. The service is texrt message based and users can transfer amounts of one Romanian new leu (US$0.31) up to 30,000 lei.

When launched this coming Monday, April 7th 2014, M-Pesa will be immediately available to 6 million Vodafone users spread all over Romania’s urban and rural areas. All that is needed to use the service is to have it activated by at any of the 300 Vodafone service stores and retail locations spread throughout the country. Vodafone plans on reaching 2,000 locations by the end of the year.

With M-Pesa activated Vodafone Romania users can top up their mobile phones, pay bills, make deposits, withdraw cash from participating agents and purchase goods.

With the large amount of money transfer and remittance service being made available all over the world, M-Pesa which originated in Kenya in 2007 has seen adequate successes. M-Pesa boasts over 16.8 million active users worldwide and has processed more than €900 million worth of person-to-person transactions per month toward the end of 2013.

The M-Pesa P2P money transfer service is available in Afghanistan, Egypt, India and South Africa.
